Creatine for men over 40 attracts plenty of bold claims. Build more muscle. Get stronger. Train harder. Perhaps even fight some of the physical effects associated with getting older.
Spend enough time looking at supplements online and you could easily come away thinking creatine is something every man should be taking.
The reality is more measured — and more interesting.
Unlike many supplements marketed to men who want to build muscle and stay strong as they age, creatine has a substantial body of research behind it. But that doesn’t make it essential, nor does it mean every claim made about it is supported by good evidence.
The more useful question isn’t simply whether creatine “works”. It’s how much difference it can realistically make once your strength training and nutrition are already in place.
Can it help you build more muscle? Can it make you stronger? What about weight gain and kidney health? Do you need to load it? And are expensive forms of creatine actually any better?
Let’s separate what the research supports from what the supplement marketing would like you to believe.
What Is Creatine and What Does It Actually Do?
Creatine isn’t a synthetic hormone or some exotic substance invented by the supplement industry.
Your body already contains it.
Creatine is produced naturally in the body and is also obtained through foods, particularly meat and fish. Most of the body’s creatine is stored in skeletal muscle, where it plays an important role in supplying energy during short, intense efforts.

That doesn’t mean swallowing creatine builds muscle by itself.
The important word there is training.
Creatine may help support the work you perform in the gym. Resistance training itself provides the stimulus that tells your body it needs to adapt.
That’s an important distinction that runs throughout the evidence on creatine.
Does Creatine Still Work After 40?
Turning 40 doesn’t suddenly change the basic way creatine works.
There is no biological switch that flips on your 40th birthday and creates a special category of “over-40 creatine”.
This is worth acknowledging because research doesn’t neatly divide people into the same age groups that fitness websites use. Creatine studies include adults across different ages, while much of the research specifically investigating ageing populations involves people considerably older than 40.

Potentially, yes — but we need to be careful about what we mean by “build muscle”.

These aren’t quite the same thing as directly measuring newly built skeletal muscle.
A meta-analysis examining creatine supplementation during resistance training in older adults found that participants receiving creatine gained more lean tissue mass than those performing resistance training while receiving a placebo.

Can Creatine Help You Get Stronger?
Muscle size and muscular strength are related, but they’re not exactly the same thing.
Research involving older adults has found that adding creatine to resistance training can improve some measures of muscular strength beyond resistance training alone.
The 2025 meta-analysis discussed earlier, for example, found a significant additional benefit for lower-body strength, although the pooled upper-body result was less convincing. Other analyses of creatine and resistance training in older adults have also reported additional improvements in strength.
The sensible conclusion isn’t:
Creatine makes you strong.
It’s:
Creatine may help you get slightly more from the strength training you’re already doing.
If your workouts never progress, your training is inconsistent or you’re not challenging your muscles sufficiently, creatine isn’t going to solve the underlying problem.
Strength is still built by repeatedly challenging your muscles and gradually increasing what they’re capable of doing.

Does Creatine Make You Gain Weight?
Simply put – it can. But this is probably responsible for more confusion around creatine than almost anything else.
You start taking it. You step on the scales a week or two later. Your body weight has increased.
The obvious conclusion is:
“I’m getting fat.”
But body weight and body fat are not the same thing.
Creatine supplementation can increase body water, particularly during the early stages of supplementation. This contributes to the increase in body mass some people notice after starting creatine.
A review examining common questions and misconceptions about creatine found that while creatine can cause some water retention, particularly over the short term, the evidence doesn’t support the idea that creatine supplementation itself increases fat mass.

The number on the scale represents everything you’re carrying — muscle, fat, water, bone, organs and everything else. It doesn’t tell you which of those things changed.
Over a longer period, someone taking creatine while resistance training may also increase lean mass. As we’ve already seen, however, we shouldn’t automatically classify every increase in lean mass as pure new muscle.
